Tigers Head East for Pivotal Sunday Showdown
Feb 28, 2026 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – March is here and Memphis doesn't have much room left to maneuver.
The Tigers (12-16, 7-8 American Conference) travel to Greenville on Sunday for a 1 p.m. CT matchup with East Carolina on ESPN+, sitting tied for eighth in the league standings with three regular-season games remaining. With only the top 10 advancing to the conference tournament, every possession carries weight.
Memphis has lived in close games all year. The Tigers are averaging 74.5 points per game while allowing 74.9, a statistical tightrope that mirrors their season. They shoot 43.4 percent from the field and hold opponents to 41.4 percent, force nearly nine steals per game and are essentially even with their opponents in rebounds and turnovers. Most nights, the difference has been a handful of plays late.
Memphis has hovered around the break-even line all season, averaging 74.5 points while allowing 74.9. Dug McDaniel continues to set the tone at 13.4 points and 4.5 assists per game, shooting 86.6 percent from the line, while Sincere Parker (12.0 ppg) and a supporting cast provide steady production.
Where Memphis has wavered is on the glass. The Tigers average 36.7 rebounds per game but are nearly even with opponents overall. In Thursday's loss to Wichita State, Memphis was outrebounded by a wide margin (-17) and allowed a flood of second-chance opportunities. With frontcourt rotations shifting and frequent four-guard lineups, finishing possessions becomes essential, especially against an East Carolina team that thrives more on effort than efficiency.
East Carolina (10-18, 5-10) has battled inconsistency but features one of the nation's top scorers in Jordan Riley, who averages a league-leading 23.7 points per game. If Memphis can limit second-chance opportunities and contain Riley's scoring bursts, the Tigers give themselves a strong chance to strengthen their footing heading into the final stretch.
Giovanni Emejuru provides size inside at 6-foot-10, averaging 13.3 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, giving ECU a physical presence that could test Memphis' interior defense.
The Tigers are fighting to secure their place in the conference tournament field, and with three games left, there's little room for error. March rarely offers comfort, but it does offer opportunity. On Sunday afternoon inside Minges Coliseum, Memphis gets another shot to steady itself and rewrite the narrative before the postseason begins.

BY THE NUMBERS
- 1: Dug McDaniel is the only American Conference player this season averaging at least 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game. The only Memphis players this century to finish a season with those marks are Jeremiah Martin (2018-19) and Antonio Burks (2001-02, 2003-04).
- 10th: The Tigers rank 10th in the country in three-point defense, allowing opponents to just shoot 29.5 percent from distance. It's the best mark for Memphis in a season since 2020-21 (27.7%) and the Tigers have held 16 teams to under 30 percent from deep, including nine in conference play.
- 24.0: Over the last two games, Dug McDaniel is averaging 24.0 points on 59.4 percent shooting (19-of-32), leading the Tigers in 32.4 minutes per game. He's coming off a season-high 29-point effort against Wichita State on Thursday where he shot 11-of-19 from the field.
- 26: Memphis is seeking its 26th-straight season with at least eight conference wins (since 2000-01). Only nine Division I programs have accomplished that streak over the same span.
- 70: Over the team's current five-game skid, opponents have attempted 70 more free throws (170-100) than Memphis, and the Tigers have been whistled for 27 more fouls (109-82).
- 82.8: The Tigers are allowing 82.8 points per game on defense in 11 road games this season, compared to 69.2 points in 15 games at home, a difference of 13.6 points per game.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
- The Pirates enter Sunday at 10-18 overall and 5-10 in league play.
- They are near the bottom of the conference in scoring offense and defensive efficiency and shoot just 41.7 percent from the field and 28.3 percent from three.
- But they possess one of the most dangerous individual scorers in the country in Jordan Riley.
- The 6-foot-5 guard is averaging 23.7 points per game, ranking second nationally, and has been even more explosive in conference play – upping his production to 26.0 points each time out.
- Riley takes nearly 20 shots per game and has hit 20 points in 18 games and eclipsed 30 points six times.
- Giovanni Emejuru is the team's second-leading scorer (13.3) and ranks No. 2 in the conference in rebounding (9.4).
- Where he makes a living is on the offensive glass, averaging 4.04 per game, the sixth best mark in the country.
- Demitri Gardner is also a double-digit scorer at 11.1 points per game.
